What is El Noveno Círculo?

El Noveno Círculo is an independent band formed by Silver, from Mexico, and Steven, from Costa Rica. The band officially started on September 15, 2021, when we uploaded "Defectuoso" from the album El Pantano to our YouTube channel. We met on Discord on December 31, 2020, and although we had little musical experience at first, forming the band pushed us to demand much more of ourselves.

We do not have a studio, so we do everything remotely with limited tools. Our mission is to create music that is both complex and enjoyable, capturing ideas we both like. We also hold high standards in composition, arrangement, production, mixing and lyrics.

We do not limit ourselves to a single genre; we compose whatever we think sounds good, although we often mix in elements of jazz. Music is a side project alongside our other activities, so we cannot dedicate ourselves exclusively to the band. We mainly upload our songs to YouTube, and we only release them on Spotify once we finish an album, which usually takes about a year and a half.

We also have a secondary channel called El Noveno Triángulo XD, where we upload short and long music-related videos to promote the band and reach more people.

Silver

Country: Mexico · Born: 20-09-2002

Role: Composer, arranger, guitarist, lyricist, singer and bassist.

Favorite genres: Jazz, Big Band, Gypsy Jazz

I am a self-taught guitarist with 6 years of experience. At first I composed only as a hobby and did not take it very seriously, although I did try to keep my work at a good level. I composed my first album with just a guitar and thought I would not make more music after that, until the band started. My first song was "Problemas con la filosofía".

Country: Costa Rica · Born: 12-11-2002

Role: Composer, arranger, pianist and producer.

Favorite genres: Jazz, Experimental Music, Funk and Ambient Music

I studied piano at SINEM for 6 years, then left music for a while. In 2017 I decided to learn FL Studio to make electronic music. At first I did not take it very seriously, but over time I had to study music theory to improve my compositions. Although I did not like the idea of learning theory at first, I gradually grew to enjoy it and taught myself all the composition basics.

Frequently asked questions

Sample questions and answers to review before publishing.

How many members are there?

Our band consists only of Silver and Steven. Anyone else taking part is considered a one-off collaboration.

What kind of content do you post on your socials?

Both on this website and on our YouTube channel @ElNovenoCirculo616 (El Noveno Círculo) and on our Spotify , we upload music. This music is composed, written, arranged, produced and mixed by Silver and Steven.

We have SoundCloud , but it is abandoned, since SoundCloud limits how many songs you can upload for free and we see no advantage in paying for that subscription to share our music.

We also have the YouTube channel @elnovenotrianguloxd666 (El Noveno Triángulo XD), our TikTok and our Instagram , where we mostly upload short music-related videos, such as music analyses and topics about instruments, among others. We also occasionally upload long videos on more specific topics.

What criteria do you use to analyze a song?

We do not believe a song can be "objectively" good or bad. Aesthetic evaluation is, semantically, subjective in itself; so what we try to do is be as fair as possible when evaluating. What seems fair to us is not to evaluate a single aspect, but most of the characteristics a musical work can have.

This gives us our well-known 10 criteria: Structure - Instrumentation - Performance and Technique - Melody - Harmony - Rhythm - Lyrics - Production - Mixing - Innovation and Originality.

A common misunderstanding is that we only evaluate complexity. You could say that each of the criteria above is split in two: complexity and quality. An example makes this easier to understand: the melody of "Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star" has high quality, since its sense, predictability, digestibility and order are quite high, but its complexity is low, since it has few notes, uses few musical resources and takes few risks. There are songs with solos of hundreds of notes that are very hard to digest even for trained ears, which gives them high complexity and low quality.

This means our system does not really favor any genre or artist, since a high final score means the musical work is both complex and high quality in most aspects.

Why are the scores in your music analyses so low?

It is easy to get carried away by emotions when aesthetically evaluating a musical work. For some people a song may be a 10/10 because it evokes intense emotions. That is completely understandable; however, since our intention is to stay as consistent as possible with our scores, giving a song a 10/10 could be read as "there cannot be a better song" or "the song literally cannot be better", which seems unreasonable to us.

Therefore, we will never use 10/10, since it could be said to point to absolute aesthetic perfection. The same goes for 0/10: that score would point to absolute aversion and imperfection, so we will not use it either.

You could say we keep songs away from both extremes, since we try to leave room for "a song can always be better or worse", both in a specific aspect and overall.

I disagree with your scoring system. Why don't you improve it?

We fully understand that the scoring system we created, by trying to be fair and consistent, does not favor any artist or song, which can create controversy and disagreement. We get it: this system does not try to dictate superiority or expect you to agree with us. It is subjective; you can disagree with us and we have no problem with that.

Which social networks are you active on?

We are only active on our Discord server, our space on Matrix , our two YouTube channels ( El Noveno Círculo and El Noveno Triángulo XD ), our TikTok , our Instagram , our Spotify and our website. We do have other networks, such as Twitter (X) , among others, but we are not very active on them.

How can I ask about commissions or lessons?

You can send us a message on our Instagram @elnovenocirculo616 or an email to [email protected] .

Where can I listen to the music?

Where can I find the story and chords of a song?
